Why use plastic free strut cards?

We know that a lot of businesses are trying to reduce their waste, and one of the main ways to do this is to reduce industrial and commercial plastic consumption. Commercial signage can consume a lot of plastic, so it’s advisable to try to step away from plastic and PVC as much as possible, instead using paper, cardboard and other materials that can be easily recycled, upcycled and reused. By using plastic free strut cards that are fully recyclable, your advertising can be changed as often as you need it to, whilst making minimal environmental impact. Simply recycle your old strut card and replace with a new design. Plastic free strut cards are perfect for the fast turnaround of new offers, promotions and events, as well as long standing signage like ‘Please use contactless’, ‘please wash your hands’ or ’till closed’ signage.

Reducing plastic

We’re all keen to reduce our environmental impact, whether that’s as an individual or as a business, and going plastic-free is a great way to do this. If you aren’t yet sure why you should try to reduce your plastic use, let us explain.

Plastic takes a long time to decompose. This is the main issue with plastic, as it stays in the environment for a seriously long time after you throw it away. Some plastic items can take up to 1000 years to decompose, outliving us ten times over! While it is decomposing, it sits on a dump or landfill, taking up valuable space and endangering any local wildlife. And if the plastic is buried and gets no access to sunlight, it will decompose even slower.

When it does finally break down, plastic molecules will enter the ecosystem – the soil, and the dietary tracks of animals – changing it. Small plastic molecules end up in animals, sometimes killing them. These microplastics then end up in us when we consume the animals. This is especially prevalent in seafood.

But can’t plastic be recycled?

Great question! The simple answer is yes, but the truth is far more complicated than that. Some plastics can indeed me recycled, but some cannot. Search Scene explains :

‘Not all plastics can be recycled due to their composition, the fact that it is too difficult and expensive for some to be processed, and that it doesn’t produce a high-quality end product that can actually be used.’

We’ve all had that moment where we’ve gone to put a plastic product in the recycling only to see the message ‘Not Currently Recycled’. Despite a lot of progress over the decades, a lot of plastic based products still cannot be recycled. If you’re unsure, it’s best to go for plastic free strut cards, posters and other signage.

How can my business reduce its plastic use?

Where possible, try to use alternatives to plastic: use plastic free strut cards for small-scale signage, and recyclable paper posters for large scale options. If you are in need of plastic signage (like PVC banners) try to invest in high quality reusable banners, that you can use time and time again, and thereby limiting your waste.

Encourage your customers to shop and act sustainably, and reward them for doing so. For example, a coffee shop might offer a discount for anyone who brings in a reusable cup, rather than needing a disposable one. Together, we can enact real change, and businesses have to be where the change starts. After all, one large scale business becoming more eco-friendly will have a much bigger positive impact than one individual could ever manage.
